Some time ago I witnessed a remarkable reflection of the full moon in a small pond. Not even a ripple marred its clear surface. Overhead the golden orb shone from a clear sky, and as I gazed on the beautiful scene I could but think that, as the calmness and clarity of the water made it the perfect reflector of the moon, so will our thought, when calmed by Love and clarified by the right idea, become a reflector of spiritual being. While I was absorbed in the perfection and beauty of this mirrored splendor, a mischievous companion thrust his walking-stick into the water and, pushing the stick down into the mud, stirred up so many impurities that the reflection was sadly marred. All this illustrated the more serious fact that thoughts of anger, hate, envy, and jealousy, when permitted to enter human consciousness, always disturb it, so that it yields but a dim reflection of the Love that heals.
In the letter to First Church of Christ, Scientist, Concord, N. H., which appeared in the Journal of April, 1899, Mrs.' Eddy writes: "Stand by the limpid lake, sleeping mid willowy banks dyed with emerald: see therein the mirrored sky,—and the moon ablaze with her mild glory will stir thy heart. Then, in speechless prayer, ask God to enable you to reflect God—to become His own image and likeness—even the calm, clear, radiant reflection of Christ's glory, healing the sick, bringing the sinner to repentance, and raising the spiritually dead in trespasses and sins to life in God."—
