Testimonies of Healing

From the June 1911 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I wish to add my testimony of the great benefits which I and my family have received, both physically and mentally, from Christian Science. Some three years ago I commenced to suffer very acute pains in the stomach, so upon my last visit to England I had myself thoroughly overhauled by a first-class physician, who diagnosed the ailment as a case of gall-stones. Upon my return to Buenos Aires, the attacks came more frequently, with intolerable pain, accompanied at last with symptoms of jaundice; so I consulted the medical faculty again and was put upon strict diet and medicine. This regime lasted some eight months, but as I got no permanent relief I at last consented to an operation, which was performed in July, 1908, by two of the leading surgeons of Buenos Aires.

To my consternation, however, the attacks began again in October and were more violent and frequent, so I consulted a stomach specialist, who said that he did not believe that I had ever had gall-stones, but was suffering from an intestinal disorder, also an affected kidney; that I was in a very bad way and would have to be very careful as to diet, etc., for many years. I was again put on a strict diet, and took medicines four or five times a day, until I was fairly tired of living. I took no further interest in my business, and told my wife that I would rather die than go on in this manner. I wrote to the doctor and told him that I was worse if anything, and his advice then was to double the doses of medicine.

This fairly disgusted me, and I determined to call in Christian Science, of which I had only heard for the first time in my life on my return voyage from England the year previous, as the ship's doctor had been cured by Christian Science when given up by his own profession. A kind practitioner came out here at once, arriving about four in the morning, and after a quiet talk started to treat me. I had been in bed two days, and had the usual indications of jaundice, and was suffering great pain, which I usually allayed with an opiate. My cure was almost instantaneous, for I got up at ten o'clock, had a cold bath and a hearty breakfast of anything I cared for, and by the next day all signs of the disease had left me. From that day to this I have never considered my diet, nor have I or my wife or children taken medicine of any description; and that is over two years ago. I have gotten back to my normal weight and activity, gaining all I had lost.
