As one who has been brought back from "the valley of the shadow of death," through the power of Truth as revealed in Christian Science, I wish to give my testimony as an expression of gratitude to God for His "unspeakable gift," and to Mrs. Eddy for her unselfish work in behalf of mankind.
Three years ago, after a long period of suffering, I came to Chicago for an operation which the best physicians had decreed was inevitable. I did not agree to this until my life had become a torture, and I was assured that after the operation I would be entirely well. I had been interested in Christian Science for some time, and had received several treatments, but without much benefit. I now understand that it was because I was halting between two opinions, as I was a member of another church, which I loved, and was a teacher in one of its schools. After the operation, however, it was found that a wrong diagnosis had been made, and I was in a far worse condition than before, since the pain was more intense and I had lost all hope of being benefited.
At length there came a day when my daughter and I believed that death was at hand, and in answer to her question whether a physician or a Christian Science practitioner should be summoned, I decided in favor of Christian Science, before I passed into a state of total unconsciousness. The practitioner called by telephone gave me absent treatment, and I was restored to consciousness in a few moments; but other loving relatives, firm in their faith in materia medica, insisted on having medical advice, and again I yielded, and another struggle ensued before I took my stand, dismissed the nurse and physician, and trusted to God alone.
