Testimonies of Healing

From the July 1912 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is with gladness (because of the good it will bring to humanity) that I testify to the broad-mindedness, kindness, and honesty manifested toward Christian Science by some members of the medical profession. A recent experience brought this to my attention, and I will try to state briefly this case as it occurred. During a severe attack of coughing and retching an internal rupture was caused, and there was such extreme pain that my husband took me at once to a hospital, where the surgeon stated that the conditions were very serious. The surgeon said to me before the operation, "You will probably not live through this operation. I have told your husband to say goodby to you." And this was done. An operation was performed at once, and because of complications (one of which was that I expected to become a mother three months later), the doctors told my husband that I had very small chances of recovery.

At this point he remembered that I had been healed of hay-fever by Christian Science, and had a copy of Science and Health at home which I had studied more or less for two years, and that my general health had improved since. He therefore telephoned a Christian Science practitioner and asked for treatment.

This was at seven p.m. of the day of the operation, and treatment began at once. The next morning the practitioner called up the hospital by telephone and asked to speak with my attending physician, thinking he knew that I was having Christian Science treatment, and said she understood that I had been operated upon the day before and that they thought my chances of recovery very small. He answered, "Yes, she was in a very bad condition last evening, but she is considerably better this morning." He was then told that Christian Science treatment had been given me since the day before, and he expressed a desire that it be continued. He said he was not the surgeon in charge, but was on the case with him, and he added that he knew there would be no objection anywhere. Later, in speaking of the persecution of Christian Scientists he said, "There isn't anything of that kind here."
