About twelve years ago I had an attack of rheumatism, which gradually grew so severe that I was unable to attend to my work. To this was added a growing weakness of the eyes, making it impossible for me to read or write without glasses, and when the weather was bad a supposedly dangerous inflammation would set in. I was in hopes that the mild climate in the state of Washington would relieve me of my trouble, but this was not the case, and the physician declared that I should not expect to get rid of the disease at my age. The medicines which he prescribed had no effect upon me, and the condition of my eyes was not more encouraging. For weeks I was obliged to go to the physician daily, had to wear dark glasses, and was unable to read or write; besides this, a few months after one of the eyes was healed the other eye would become diseased.
About four years ago we became acquainted with some one who recommended treatment in Christian Science, of which at that time I knew little more than the name. "Can Christian Science heal diseased eyes?" I asked with surprise. "Certainly!" was the reply; and since the remedies heretofore applied had brought no permanent relief, I decided to follow the advice given, and applied for treatment to the practitioner who had been recommended. With a week's treatment one eye was completely healed, and so was the other eye when it became inflamed a few months later. Now I am able to read even the smallest print without spectacles.
I was not treated for the rheumatism; it vanished completely through the constant reading of Science and Health, the Journal, and the Sentinel. Since I have taken up the study of Christian Science I have also stopped smoking—a habit which I had contracted in early years—and have no desire to use tobacco now. Mrs. Eddy has shown us how we may become partakers in the fulfilment of the divine promises. Next to God, I thank her from the depths of my heart.—Spokane, Wash.
