"BY THEIR FRUITS"

From the August 1912 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Our beloved Leader tells us that "the divine Principle of all expresses Science and art throughout His creation" (Science and Health, p. 507). True art is therefore the expression of natural good, is inherent in good, and is the embodiment in human consciousness of the divine idea. It can never be limited, is always the result of inspiration, and is unfailingly elevating, ennobling, and health-bestowing; it symbolizes a divine process by which heaven (harmony) is manifested, and humanity is given of the things of Spirit. The thought depicted upon the canvas by the touch of the artist's brush, whether it be in the gorgeous colorings of an autumnal sunset, the restless waves of the storm-tossed sea, or the quieter, homelier beauty of rural simplicity; the thought which chips and chisels at a piece of unhewn marble until the form and contour of the human seem to take on immortal semblance; the thought which, imprinted on papyrus, cylinders, stone, and paper, has withstood the ravages of time and has enabled man to converse with man down through all the centuries, is at best but the human concept of the beauty and divine equipoise of this consummate art.

The highest, sweetest, and purest expression of art is healing, and as Christian Science stands for health and holiness and is built upon the Rock, the healing Christ, the Christian Scientist is not only the outgrowth and the embodiment of scientific Christianity, but he is in thought, word, and deed the exemplification of Christian Science practise and demonstration. The psalmist said, "Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer." To be acceptable in the sight of God, good, thought must be like good; it must be in accord with the one Mind; there must be perfect reflection. The Christian Scientist knows, obeys, and loves the one God, good; he knows that God is in reality his Father, from whom he inherits only righteousness and the understanding to reflect it in health, holiness, and good works. His thoughts are God's thoughts, radiating joy, plenty, and unceasing activity in right endeavor.

The true Christian Scientist is governed, controlled, animated, and sustained by divine Principle; he manifests and expresses the one Mind, the Mind which was in Christ Jesus; hence he reflects the one intelligence, and the discernment to know the reality of all that God creates. The true Christian Scientist exists because Soul exists. The essence of his being is in the reflection of Soul's infinite resources, wherewith mankind are blessed; hence he is conscious of the all-sufficiency, potency, and bounty of Soul to meet and supply every need.
