In September, 1910, I submitted twice to a most serious operation on the head, but after a while the swellings appeared again over the right eye, and an incision had to be made on the skull a third time; but even then the trouble was not removed. I went through great suffering at that time, and I was absolutely unable to do physical work, while my extreme nervousness was very trying for my family. Those surrounding me alone know how much I had to contend with during that one year. I lost interest in everything and became morose; the beauty of nature, and even music, had lost its charm for me. I felt that something must be done, but did not seem able to find the right thing. My physician had always cheered me up and held out the hope to me that after years I might possibly attain to normal health again, but there seemed to be no improvement in my condition, and when a bladder trouble was added, I lost all hope of recovery.
While in this state of despair I heard of Christian Science, and called upon a practitioner to ask for treatment. The first comfort which I found in this teaching was that I did not need to submit again to the surgeon's knife, and I learned that God alone is our Comforter and the healer of all our diseases. With four weeks' treatment in Christian Science I was perfectly well. I then went to my physician to show myself a well man, and after a rather lengthy examination he stated that all the symptoms of the disease in the head had completely disappeared.
After a very short while we were to have even stronger evidence to convince us of God's ever-present help. My niece had an attack of poisoning, her arm being terribly swollen. I sent her to a Christian Science practitioner, who immediately took up treatment, and after a few days the swelling completely disappeared and she did not experience the slightest pain.
