It is now twelve years since I turned to Christian Science for help, and that was after I had tried many material means and had failed to find a cure for a chronic bowel disorder. I knew nothing of Christian Science at that time, but was attracted by the healing of a friend, when I saw the change from confirmed invalidism to a perfect state of health, the friend manifesting great happiness and activity. When she told me that Christian Science had brought about this change, I decided immediately to see what it could do for me. My faith was truly no larger than a "mustard seed." I was filled with discouragement because all material methods had failed and my prayers, too, had failed, so I could not see how the prayers of a practitioner would be answered if my own met no response. I am thankful that I had, however, sufficient faith to continue, for in two weeks' time this truth brought me perfect healing.
While I shall never cease to be grateful for the physical healing, yet how much greater was the mental and spiritual healing! It was through the physical healing that I was led to understand God, divine Truth, more clearly and to have a better conception of man's real being as an idea of God. I no longer thought of my true self as a discordant, suffering, unhappy mortal. Not indeed as mortal at all, but spiritual, because we know that man is made in God's image and likeness, and that discord has no place in the image of God, good.
I am indeed grateful that I have some understanding of this truth to teach my little daughter, so that she can be saved the necessity of unlearning many things. She has been taught the allness of God, the all-power of Truth. She knows no other medicine and understands that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494).
