I did not come to Christian Science for physical healing, but for a heartache which seemed unbearable. I had access to the Christian Science literature for a year or two, but I did not take it up in earnest study until I had become very miserable and wretched. I was sad and lonely, and I could find no peace until I turned to God with my whole heart and He opened to me the way in Christian Science. By the kind and loving help of a practitioner, I was lifted out of a darkened sense of misery and despair into a life of joy and peace. I have learned that in proportion to the surrender of self and to my understanding of Truth, my surroundings have become brighter and more harmonious. I now have a kind and loving husband and a peaceful, happy home. Although at times our little bark has been sore beset by the waves of error that surged about us, yet Christ, Truth, has ever been with us, and he has commanded the waves. As it may encourage some one who is passing through a dark hour, I will mention a few instances in which an understanding of the teachings of Christian Science has enabled us to overcome error.
At the time my first child was born. I was seemingly surrounded by very bitter hate and persecution. Although earnestly studying and living the truth as nearly as I could, my understanding was not sufficient to meet the opposing error. A practitioner was called, however, in time to save me from untold suffering and probably from death, as the conditions were said to be extremely abnormal, and what would have been a very great loss was changed into spiritual gain. I learned through this experience that real being can never be lost, because it is in and of God, and in learning to love my enemies I found I had none. On a later occasion, the birth was perfectly normal and with but very little pain. A mortal law that was laid down for me with my second child was met in less than three days by spiritually understanding and holding in thought Paul's declaration that "the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." Our baby is a bright, lovable child, and all her needs are being met in Truth.
My husband has been healed of fever and colds simply by reading the Bible and our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." We have passed through great financial difficulties, but instead of yielding to fear and discouragement, we have been enabled through Christian Science to trust in God in the darkest hours; and although there is yet much to overcome, things are gradually taking on a more harmonious aspect.
