From early childhood I had worn a brace because of spinal disease, and I was treated by a physician of New York city who was a specialist in such troubles. My condition was serious at first, but great improvement followed the early treatment, and I was able to enjoy life about the same as other children, although always wearing the brace. When I was between twelve and sixteen years of age, repeated promises were given by my physician that the brace could soon be removed, and these encouraged me greatly, as I was very desirous of being well without it. His consent was never given, however, and another sickness came upon me in the form of nervous collapse. My mother consulted a physician in our home city, who advised her to remove the brace entirely. He prescribed no medicine, but told me to lie on my back on a hard bed as many hours each day as possible. His advice was faithfully followed, as my ambition was to be well without having to wear a brace, and to appear like other people.
After a time I became quite active in going and coming, but it was through will-power, and again I suffered from nervousness, added to which was severe backache. Then, when it seemed as though there was no hope, a friend urged me to try Christian Science. A student of Mrs. Eddy who was practising in Utica, but of whom we had not heard before, was sent for and came to my home. From her first visit light began to dawn upon me, and a "sure hope" took the place of hopelessness. Gradually I grew stronger, less nervous, and the pains in my back disappeared and have never returned. Whereas I was unable to walk far, I am now enjoying long walks, and a cough which had troubled me, along with the other ailments, disappeared within twelve hours through Christian Science treatment.
I thank God for Christian Science, and for the woman who discovered it and brought it to the attention of mankind in her inspired writings. This truth has brought to me health and freedom.—Utica, N. Y.
