With gratitude to God, and in the...

From the February 1913 issue of The Christian Science Journal

With gratitude to God, and in the hope that my experience may be helpful to others, I gladly give this testimony to the healing power of Truth. Some twenty-five years ago I became afflicted with a weak back, which, as years passed, became a great inconvenience to me, at times rendering me unfit for work, my occupation being that of carpenter and cabinet maker. In addition to this trouble, about eighteen years ago I experienced an attack of scrofula in a very severe form.

My right arm became affected from the wrist to the elbow, the discharge being extremely offensive both to myself and to those around me. My physicians urged me to have the arm amputated, saying it was the only means of saving my life. This, however, I refused to do, and finally, after three years of suffering the worst condition ceased, although the bone was exposed from elbow to wrist. One of my lower limbs then became affected, and my suffering with this was a repetition of what I had endured with my arm. In course of time, however, the diseased parts healed up, but both the leg and the arm were badly shrunken and also very weak.

This condition continued until the summer of 1910, when my back became so weak and painful that I felt I must have relief, and my wife suggested that I take Christian Science treatment. This I decided to do, and called on a practitioner, explaining that I desired help for my back; I also told her of the scrofulous condition, without a thought, however, of receiving help in that direction, as I considered it beyond the power of any human agency to heal. What was my surprise and joy, then, to find, after a few treatments, that not only was my back free from pain, but the discoloration had disappeared from the scar on my arm. The hard knots of flesh began to take on a natural appearance, the skin gradually becoming loose from the bone and new flesh beginning to grow where none had been for eighteen years. I continued the treatment for two weeks, and during that time my back and arm became so strong that I could do any kind of work.
