UPON coming into Christian Science, our false concepts of life and happiness undergo so gradual a change that one is not fully aware of the mighty work of this leaven of Truth, until suddenly some passage in the Scriptures or in the Christian Science literature stands out illumined, and in its light we see the distance which we have traveled in our journey from sense to Soul. At such moments discouragement at our seeming slowness in rising out of material conditions vanishes, because we are rejoicing in actual accomplishment instead of wearily contemplating the daily problem; and in this rejoicing more and more of the light of divine Truth is filling our consciousness.
One Wednesday evening, as the congregation rose to sing that beautiful hymn, "In heavenly love abiding," the writer was carried back in thought to an afternoon spent with a girlhood friend of many years ago. To the question as to what she prayed for most, she calmly answered, "For the love of God." To the writer at that time the love of God was something to be taken for granted. She believed that she loved God, but actually to pray for such a thing had not appealed to her when material needs seemed insistent. Years after, through the need of physical healing, she turned to Christian Science, and felt for the first time the touch of Love that heals and saves. As understanding grew, she learned the power of that abiding presence, and gained a larger sense of how abundant had been her blessing, for who can measure "the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!"
Christian Science not only heals us of all our diseases, but it brings into our hearts so great a rejoicing that all the world seems made anew; then little by little we are gently led away from our false sense of material needs, to the contemplation of divine Love, and with the psalmist we cry out, "Thy loving-kindness is better than life."
