For many years I have received blessings without number from Christian Science, so lovingly unfolded to us by our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." It was not, however, until recently that I had it brought sharply to my remembrance how selfishly I have been withholding the testimony of my wonderful healing and the experience leading up to it.
When very young, a terrible illness came upon me, affecting every organ in my body. I was then living in a village where there was a worthy physician and surgeon, but he soon exhausted all his skill and said I must be moved to a city for more expert medical treatment. This was done, and after examination by two eminent surgeons, I was taken to a private hospital and operated upon. After several weeks of terrible suffering, I was sent home in a most serious condition, and in four weeks was so much worse that they again took me to the hospital; but it was then so crowded that I was left at the home of a friend to await my turn. This friend, herself the wife of a physician, had found materia medico, unable to meet severe illness in her own family, and she had several years before been healed in Christian Science. She began to tell me of its wonderful truths, and I drank it all in like the hungry child that I was; but although I was so under the control of materia medica that I could not seemingly get away from it, I never forgot the beautiful things which this dear woman told me, and I have always felt that the truth she gave me kept me alive until I found my way into the kingdom.
In about a week after my arrival at her home I was taken to the hospital, where, after an examination, they pronounced my case hopeless without another operation, and then added that I was too ill to undergo anything of a surgical nature; so I was taken home to die! Terrible spasms came over me many times a day, and I overheard the doctor telling my mother that the end would come in one of these, accompanied by symptoms which are too dreadful to think of or mention.
