It was in August, 1894, that Christian Science was first brought into New Bern by one who, though not claiming to be a Scientist, was faithfully and diligently studying the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. A few friends, hearing of the healing of long invalidism and of a great sorrow through Christian Science, called to ask this seeker for the truth respecting Christian Science. Becoming convinced that it was the truth as taught by Christ Jesus, after a few desultory meetings to study the Lesson-Sermons, they decided to meet regularly on Sunday morning. Later a hall was secured and regular services held on Sunday, together with a meeting for the giving of testimony on Friday evening.
On Aug. 18, 1902, the society disbanded to reorganize as First Church of Christ, Scientist, New Bern, N.C., with a membership of eighteen, twelve of whom were members of The Mother Church in Boston. This growth was the result of the active healing work which had been done, for very many wonderful cases of healing rewarded the faithful labors of these pioneer workers.
The church early began to think of a permanent home, and on Oct. 17, 1902, having learned that a valuable corner lot was soon to be for sale, a meeting was called. It was agreed that this presented a fine opportunity, as part of the lot could be sold, thus adding a substantial sum to the building fund, which in anticipation of the need had already been started.
