For several years I could not reconcile myself to the prevailing religious beliefs. I became an agnostic and an infidel, giving up all church relations, the Sunday service, Sunday school work, and guild work. Everything seemed empty formalism and not the law of Love. All I had to cheer people with was a lot of light, funny stories, and for myself a quantity of work, which proved a balm when everything else failed me. This continued until one winter, when I had a physical difficulty which kept me from speaking aloud. For weeks I went to my work able only to whisper, and at times I had to use strenuous measures to do that. At the same time I was endeavoring to recover from a fall that I had sustained the previous spring.
Years before, I had met a friend who said she was a Christian Scientist and spoke of a Christian Science church, The Mother Church, in Boston; and remembering this, as I was staying in that city, one Sunday morning I started out to find this church and see what the people were like who attended it. When I arrived there, I was courteously ushered to a seat. The reading of the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, greatly interested me, and as I listened to it I began to feel a peace such as I had never known before. At the close of the service I found that I was healed.
On the way home, my one joyous thought was: "What if this is the panacea to heal all the world's ills!" It seemed as if my feet hardly touched the ground, I was so free from the bondage that had held me for such a long time. Christian Science is in constant use by me. I use it much as a preventive, and it keeps me well and happy.
