I send this testimony with deep thankfulness to God and gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for the many blessings Christian Science has brought me. For about fourteen years I suffered from an illness which doctors could not diagnose. After ten years one doctor announced that it was kidney trouble, but tried without avail to help me. He told me in my wife's presence that there was nothing known to the medical profession to cure me. Other doctors were consulted, but they were all of the same opinion. I went to two seaside resorts and obtained relief for a very short time. Life was a great burden to me, for not only did I suffer from kidney trouble, but from a weak heart and acute stomach disorder, often having to walk the room at night on account of the pain. I was in addition suffering intensely from nervous breakdown. My eyes were a great trouble to me, also deafness in one ear; while my sleep was very irregular. There did not seem a spark of joy or happiness left in this world for me. I struggled hard to get about my business, but felt I should drop beneath it very soon.
One day a friend said there was one more chance for me, and it was in Christian Science. I had thought I had been living a Christian life for some time, for I had continually prayed to God for relief, but it seemed He would not answer my prayer. My friend was not a Scientist, but knew of a case where Christian Science had been a great help. He gave me the address of a Christian Scientist, to whom I wrote, receiving a very kind letter which said that Christian Science is simply the true knowledge of God and man, the truth whereof Jesus spoke when he said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
I went to see this Scientist, and asked several questions regarding the spiritual meaning of the Bible, which were answered very readily and to my entire satisfaction. I then began reading the Sentinel, which proved very helpful, and also Science and Health, which was a great help, although there were many things I could not understand. By continually reading, however, these things came more clearly to me. I asked for treatment and received much help. Though the healing did not come quickly, still I was sure that Christian Science had given me more relief than anything else.
