IN Isaiah we read, "In his love and in his pity he ... carried them all the days of old." Always on looking back at the time before I knew of Christian Science, this passage stands out in my thought. The light which has come since has shown very clearly how through years of illness and unhappiness I always longed to know God and reached out in search of Him, yet was never able to find any knowledge that was satisfying. At last, when to human sense the waves and tumult of mortal discord seemed to be almost overwhelming, I was led to Christian Science, though then I thought of it only as the most beautiful religion of which I had ever heard.
About that time I had illness upon illness, one attack being diagnosed as appendicitis with abscess. An operation was ordered at once. I had been through so much that though always able to brace myself to meet what seemed inevitable, there was an inward conviction that this was the end of what it was possible to bear, and in that hour of desperate need I inwardly cried out to God for help. I then asked that a Christian Science friend be called up and told of my condition. Through a mistake I did not know that help was being given, nor did I understand what Christian Science treatment is, but Truth answered my cry. When the doctors made an examination on my arrival at the home where they were waiting, to their great astonishment there was no sign of abscess. After some discussion the operation was abandoned for the time being, although they said it would have to take place some time.
Later I was again helpless with illness and was led to ask a Christian Science practitioner for help. At the first treatment I was instantaneously and completely healed of an internal trouble which had caused almost constant and sometimes very intense pain for eight or nine years. Many doctors had been consulted, but they said nothing could be done; that I must walk very little, and lie down a great deal. When Christian Science treatment was requested, the conditions of my work necessitated my standing nearly all day, and I was rarely out of pain. It can be imagined what it meant to have that burden lifted. At the second treatment neuritis, for which all the usual remedies had been tried in vain, was completely healed; also severe headaches that usually lasted three days, and colds that meant days in bed, entirely disappeared.
