It is several years since I gave up medicine and decided to try Christian Science, as I had come to the conclusion that there was nothing else that could help me even temporarily. My health had been poor for years, getting gradually worse each winter until the fall of 1910, when I had a severe attack of bronchial trouble from which it seemed as if I would never recover. I had been having these attacks every year, and would be confined to my bed or the house for several weeks and then would cough all winter. I also had had asthma since early childhood, and always had to take the greatest care of myself. I did not gain any strength after I was taken with this last bronchial attack and was having hemorrhages of the lungs. Our family physician did not give us any encouragement but told my husband that I had serious lung trouble.
My husband then proposed that we try Christian Science, and I consented rather reluctantly, as I had not much faith in it and knew nothing about it. I was trying to be resigned to leaving my precious babies in the care of God, when I had not been trusting Him with my own life but was depending on material remedies instead. We telephoned to a Christian Science practitioner and treatment was begun. There was improvement at once, but as my healing seemed slow we thought it best to have another practitioner. The bowel trouble soon yielded to the truth. My health is better now than it ever was, and I do not have to wear extra clothing in order to be comfortable; besides I can eat anything I want and work every day in the week. I have been doing the washing for the family for over two years, something I never could do before. I can now thank God that my healing was not accomplished at once, as the delay caused me to strive for and to gain a better understanding of God than I had ever hoped to have. I also learned that we must not follow the Master just for the loaves and fishes.
For the physical benefits received, — and they are many, as every member of the family has been helped, — I am grateful, but words fail to express my thankfulness to God for the understanding I have gained of Him through the spiritual interpretation of the Bible as taught in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy. — Crowell, Texas
