Testimonies of Healing

After a long period of silence, due...

From the February 1915 issue of The Christian Science Journal

After a long period of silence, due to the fact that I desired to be absolutely certain that I was healed, I am impelled to express my gratitude for what Christian Science has done for me. In doing so, I desire to express my thankfulness to God, also my gratitude to those dear friends who were the means of showing me the way, and who so loyally stood by me in the face of strong antagonism on my part.

About the first of January, 1913, I was taken with what the doctors afterward told me was locomotor ataxia. I had just started a new branch office for the company with which I was connected, and naturally felt discouraged to be obliged to give up the opportunity that was before me. I did not at first understand what the trouble was, and thinking I would soon improve, kept it to myself. It gradually grew worse, however, until it was almost impossible for me to get around at all. At last I decided to see a doctor, and did so about the first of February. At that time I could do nothing in the way of attending to my business. The doctor at first gave me some encouragement, but as I continued to grow worse, he finally told me that I had locomotor ataxia. I then informed my company that I was unable to attend to business, and requested that they send a man here to settle up the affairs, as I had decided that it was only a matter of a short time before I must die.

Little did I know of the earnest prayers that were being offered for me by the dearest friend I had on earth, one who had been studying Christian Science for two years but dared not express it to me, owing to my antagonism. When the time came that I decided there was nothing else to do, I had practically made up my mind to end it all, and had written this friend that I was ready to die; but "man's extremity is God's opportunity." This is one of the truest sayings ever uttered, as I immediately received a letter in reply, saying that the opportunity had presented itself to mention Christian Science to me, and containing a request that I see a practitioner. I at first resented this, but after thinking that I could at least grant this request before the end, I called up a practitioner and made arrangements for a visit. I must say that at first I could see nothing in Christian Science; nevertheless, I forgot about carrying out my former intention, and this in itself is ample proof that the healing had begun. I continued my visits regularly, and gradually grew interested in the unfolding of the truth. I read a great deal from Science and Health and our other literature, which had become to me both food and medicine.
