SIN THE CAUSE OF DISEASE

From the February 1915 issue of The Christian Science Journal

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE seeks primarily the moral regeneration of mankind, the physical healing which is effected being properly secondary to the main import of this teaching. The basis of all disease is found in conscious or unconscious indulgence in sin, and in dealing effectively with sin, Truth uncovers and destroys the cause of disease. Our Saviour repeatedly pointed out that indulgence in sin brings physical suffering. To the impotent man whom he healed he said, "Sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee."

In considering this point, some may ask, How do you explain the illness from which innocent children and professedly Christian people suffer? "Who did sin," queried the disciples, "this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?" "Neither," the Master answered, "but that the works of God should be made manifest in him." Wrong thinking, somewhere, is surely responsible for the sin whose effect is disease, and only through right thinking can it be healed and the power of Truth be manifested.

It is well to remember, in this connection, that sin means all that is contrary to the law of God, or eternal good; thus hate is never good or any part of good. God being altogether good, there is no hate in Him or in His creation; therefore one who hates, or who believes that hate has power, is breaking the first commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," for he is in belief raising evil to equal power with God. It is the destruction of this belief, through the understanding of the omnipotence of God, good, which effects the cure of disease.
