In her discovery and gift to the world of Christian Science,...

From the April 1915 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN her discovery and gift to the world of Christian Science, "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony" (Rudimental Divine Science, p.1), Mrs. Eddy opened a long closed door, and the "great light" which of old shone upon a people sitting in the darkness of sin and suffering, once more shed abroad its radiant beams,—"the Sun of righteousness," dissipating the shadows and "with healing in his wings." One Has only to read or listen to the multitudinous testimonies to the efficacy of Christian Science to realize how great a boon Mrs. Eddy thus conferred on mankind; and that is why, so long as Christian Scientists are faithful to the trust conferred upon them by their Leader, the door of hope can never again be shut.

There are few Christian Scientists, however, who have not found in their own experience that discouragement and fear are evil's most subtle allies. The earnest desire to overcome all that is unlike good, and the striving to this end, seems at times to be the signal for the appearing of everything that can harass and distress. Dark days may come, and hope and courage steadily lessen, and though apparently everything possible has been done, the hoped-for release does not come. Is the struggle, then, to be given over? Is there no recourse, no succor for the burdened and helpless?

When the hour is darkest, dawn is at hand. When discouragement and fear are paramount, is the time to lean harder on the promises, to know of a certainty that God is unchanging good and that He will deliver them that put their trust in Him. His promise reads, "No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper." God is with His people just as truly today as when He guided and delivered them of old; He has not changed, but distrust and disobedience have barred the way to a realization of His unfailing love.
