I had been attending First Church of Christ, Scientist, London, for about a year and had enjoyed the services, but had no wish to make a study of Science and Health until the following experience came to me. While preparing to bathe my little girl, then two months old, our three year old boy, who was standing up in his chair beside me, overbalanced. In my anxiety to save him, the baby rolled to the floor. We were all very much frightened, but as neither of the children seemed hurt, I bathed and dressed the little one and went through the day quite happily. Toward evening she became fretful, so I put her to bed, but at nine o'clock she awoke crying very pitifully, and when I took her up I found a large swelling apparently full of fluid on the side of her head. I immediately sent for the doctor, who after an examination recommended a warm water compress and said he would call in the morning. After he had gone I asked my husband to telephone to the only Christian Science practitioner we knew at that time, but as he was not at home, we tried to put into practice the little we had learned during the past year.
We had a very peaceful night and the infant awoke at five o'clock the next morning quite happy, although the swelling seemed larger. At ten o'clock the doctor called and said he considered the child out of danger, but he had never seen such a lump on any child's head. He continued to call, but after the third day I told him it was unnecessary to do so again. He said he could perform an operation and take the fluid away, but I would not have this done and declared I would be patient and trust God. He told me I would need a lot of patience, and after he had gone I wrote to the lady who had first told me of Christian Science, asking her to help me. The result was that the swelling went down perceptibly during the night and in a few days the head was its normal size. There was no discoloration, though predicted by the doctor.
This was to me such a wonderful proof of the healing power of Truth that I gladly took up the study of Science and Health. Since that time many blessings have come into our home, and I can never be grateful enough for them. Perhaps the greatest blessing has been my study of the New Testament. Brought up in the Jewish faith, I knew nothing of its teachings Until I began to study Christian Science. When I read the gospels of Matthew and Luke for the first time, many bitter tears were shed, for I saw how easy it was for the Jews to misunderstand Jesus' teaching when he said, "I and my Father are one," and "Before Abraham was, I am;" and so on through the ages this teaching has been misunderstood, until it was explained in Christian Science, as on page 333 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy has clearly pointed out that Jesus was referring to the Christ, Truth. Perhaps only those who have had a similar experience can realize what a joy it has been to study the New Testament for the first time with such a key as Mrs. Eddy has given us in Science and Health.—
