While visiting my sister in Tucson, Ariz., with my three children, the boy of six was taken ill. I called in a doctor, but the disease developed into lung trouble. Then I sent for my husband, also for my brother, a practising physician, who was with the boy almost constantly for a month and did everything in his power to help him. During this time the little fellow had serious bowel trouble and his food was limited to a strict diet. He was losing in weight and strength and was not able to walk without assistance, and even then had pain in his limbs. My brother seemed to think that, the only thing which would help the child would be to remain in that climate.
On account of business my husband had returned to St. Louis, and an indefinite separation from him seemed inevitable. It was then that my sister advised me to take up Christian Science, and thanks be to God I realized the need of it. I called in a practitioner, but at first the boy seemed to grow worse, and one night he coughed and expectorated all night. This was certainly my testing time, but I had lost all faith in medicine and trusted entirely in the power of divine Love. The practitioner assured me, when I telephoned about one o'clock, that the boy's condition was due to the chemicalization which was taking place. After having passed such a terrible night he arose the next morning, walked, ran, and played all day. He had not done this for nearly three months. There was stiffness in his limbs for about a week, but after that they, as well as the bowels, became normal and his food was no longer limited. He continued to improve, and about a month afterward we returned to St. Louis. He goes to school every day and is well.
The practitioner led me to realize that, of ourselves we can do nothing, but that everything is gained by the freedom which Truth gives us through faith in Christ. This has awakened in me a love for the Bible, and through study of Science and Health I am gaining a better understanding of God. I have been healed of sleeplessness, bowel trouble, and a weakness from which I had suffered since the birth of my three children. For all this I am thankful to God, who through Christ Jesus has given to the world the healing of sickness as well as of sin.
