One morning I was raising a window...

From the January 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One morning I was raising a window which had a defective fastening, when it came crashing down upon my hand and severed the entire tip of the little finger, tearing the nail out with it. I immediately sent word to my husband and to a Christian Science practitioner, who advised having a surgeon replace the severed end. When we got to the surgeon he told us it was impossible and distinctly inadvisable to do so, for it was almost certain to develop blood-poison and gangrene; and he refused to stitch the tip on because, as he said, it was dead.

When we told him we were having Christian Science treatment, his altitude changed entirely, and he said. "Well, I can do things for Christian Scientists that I cannot do for other people." He decided that if we would assume all responsibility he would stitch the tip on for me. reserving the right to remove it again at the first sign of infection. We agreed, knowing that there would be no infection. I was very grateful to find this doctor so free and unprejudiced regarding Christian Science. I did not lose my sleep or suffer to any extent. The union of the tip with the finger became perfect and a new nail took the place of the one torn out.

I am grateful for Christian Science and its healing power, but most of all for the fact that it conquers fear, and establishes God's law here on earth where we can use it to the extent that we understand it; also because it teaches that God is all-power, and that there is and can be no power but. good.—
