Testimonies of Healing

For more than ten years I suffered...

From the November 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For more than ten years I suffered so from what was termed chronic nervous indigestion, that I was forced to give up my business and engage in work which would keep me out of doors more. Material remedies of every kind had been used without beneficial results, and as the malady was declared to be inherited, physicians said that no cure could be effected, but I might be made more comfortable by living in the open air as much as possible, with plenty of exericise, if I would be careful of my diet and keep myself free from worry. All of this was impossible, however, as I was a business woman, not only dependent upon myself but with others depending upon me.

My sufferings increased until life became almost a burden; then Christian Science was recommended to me by a friend who was not a Christian Scientist but who knew of cures be ing effected through its application. I had been brought up in an orthodox faith, and had always heard Christian Science spoken of as something to be avoided. I was therefore reluctant to seek it, but again man's extremity was God's opportunity, for my sufferings became so intense I was glad to turn to anything that might afford relief. I called on a practitioner, and made it quite emphatic that while I wished healing from my sufferings, I would in no wise change my religion.

Needless to say, the loving help given me, together with the sweet assurance of God's power and everpresence, resulted in freeing me from stomach trouble in a week. A copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy was reluctantly purchased and read, because of my promise to the practitioner, but for many months it was only words to me. Yet the fact remained that whereas I had suffered, now I was well, and the reason must be contained in this book. In then began to attend the Christian Science church, and while at first the service seemed uninteresting, it was not long before the clouds lifted and what had seemed but words was illumined with new meaning, and the Bible and the Christian Science textbook became the most interesting books I had ever read.
