When I was asked why I did not try Christian Science, I was about to undergo an operation for the removal of an abnormal growth which for two years had caused me great suffering. I accepted the invitation to participate in the reading of the Lesson-Sermon at the home of the questioner. The subject was "Spirit," and I went home with this point gained, that as a child of God I was created spiritually. I decided to try Christian Science, but to continue my preparations for going to the hospital, so as to be ready for it if I were not healed.
When my friend was asked to take up the work for me, she eagerly and lovingly responded. She came to my apartment and left Science and Health with me, and I began with the chapter on Prayer. After having read the quotations from the Bible, I came to these words: "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." Then I realized that in submitting to the knife I was simply having another god, and I picked up the certificate which was signed for my entrance to the hospital and burned it. While I watched it turn to ashes I murmured, "Not my will, but thine, be done." I was instantaneously and completely healed. A waste-paper basket full of medicine was thrown away, as I had learned that God does not need any help from material sources, for with Him all things are possible.
After this healing I found my life was started on a new basis, and through the study and application of Christian Science I have indeed become a new creature. The mental and moral healing followed, and after two years of earnest work I was ready to be a member of the Christian Science church. For every step of advancement I give thanks and joy.
