A few years ago I was an habitual...

From the December 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A few years ago I was an habitual drunkard, a confirmed cigarette smoker, and a gambler. I was taken to a Christian Science practitioner after being on a protracted siege of dissipation, and received an immediate healing of the liquor habit. Then started my process of being born again, or the putting off of the old man and the putting on of the new. One by one the offensive habits left me, and as a result of constant study of Science and Health I began to advance spiritually and in the business world.

I know of many "forlorn and shipwrecked" brothers who, seeing this wonderful truth demonstrated, have taken heart again. If anyone four years ago had asked me to give even a dollar to any kind of church organization, he would have had a very disagreeable reception. I am glad this sense of limitation and injustice has been overcome, and that in its place there is a desire to see the kingdom of heaven established on earth, and to do anything I can to bring about the reign of peace and harmony.

My advance in business has been wonderful. While only a trifle over thirty years old at present, I have been called upon to give talks on salesmanship before some of the largest houses in the country. I say this is wonderful, because four years ago I was considered a worthless, hopeless character. Science and Health is to-day healing the world, and anyone that knows anything of it certainly appreciates all that is being done by The Mother Church and The Christian Science Publishing Society.—
