If ever a mortal was in bondage...

From the April 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

If ever a mortal was in bondage, it was I, but Christian Science freed me after all material methods had failed. From childhood I had struggled for health. At seventeen years of age my eyes seemed to give out and were in a terrible condition, glasses being worn most of the time for twenty years.

In September, 1898, I met with a street car accident and received a number of injuries, but the physicians who attended me seemed most alarmed about the injury to the spine and head, especially the latter. For years I suffered untold misery, being subject to terrible headaches which rendered me delirious for hours. The physician who attended me said he feared I would pass away in one of these attacks. In July, 1905, after the birth of my last child, three inner goiters seemed to be manifested, and rheumatism, which had troubled me a great deal, was worse than ever. For nine years after that the struggle was terrible. Everything that could be suggested was tried, but to no avail, four physicians out of five declaring that to operate would be fatal.

In 1908 my husband asked me to try Christian Science, as he had seen one case of healing which seemed wonderful to him; but I was indignant that he should ask me to do such a thing, and struggled on for five years more, when seemingly the last stage was reached, as I was growing weaker every day, and choking to death. Finally I consented to try Christian Science, though with the feeling that I was giving up God and everything else; but the morning after the first treatment I arose feeling as though a load had been lifted from me. I knew that what had been done for me no one but God could do, and realized that I had been healed. With a few more treatments all the ailments were overcome. I gained in weight, and the healing has been permanent. Glasses have not been worn since the first treatment.
