For eight years I suffered from a severe nervous trouble which resulted in almost permanent incapacity to work. I tried "nature cures" and vegetarianism; but although I experienced a measure of relief, there was no cure. I submitted to strict dieting only to find that heart trouble was replaced by severe stomach trouble. I was greatly reduced in flesh and seemed a complete wreck. While at times there was apparently some improvement, the slightest disturbance would throw me back upon the sick-bed. Last summer symptoms of paralysis were added, which threatened to develop into a cataleptic state. Existence seemed a very hell to me.
In this condition of greatest need, of mental and physical anguish, help came from God. Some time previous my attention had been called to Christian Science by a friend, and I wrote to a practitioner in Hamburg, requesting that she give me treatment, which she did with much love and consecration. After her first visit the attacks ceased completely, and fear and worry were replaced by peace and calm. In two weeks' time the weakness of the heart also disappeared and I was able to get up.
I then believed I could go on by myself, but became careless in my study of the text-book. As a result there was a relapse, but the inharmonious conditions were removed through the patient and loving efforts of the practitioner. When she called on me, I was again feeling very miserable and so weak that I could hardly talk, but she bravely handled the error calling itself a disease, and asked me to go with her to the Christian Science reading-room. I had not been able to use the street car for many weeks, nor even attempted to go down town, but the sense of trust and faith returned, and I got dressed.
