Testimonies of Healing

From the August 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the early part of 1915 I had a wonderful healing through Christian Science from what is called double pneumonia. There had been signs of a cough for some days, but as it had not incovenienced me, little attention was paid to it, though I saw later that I should have been more alert and tried to destroy it in the way we are taught to do in Christian Science. One morning I got up feeling much as usual, but during the day my breathing became more difficult and by evening I had become delirious, so that help from a practitioner was asked for. Things were at a crisis for the next two days, and I know it was owing to the ceaseless work done in Christian Science, and the constant reading of the textbook to me by my sister, that I was kept alive. I was told later that the reading was the only thing which checked the delirium.

As fear got the better of one of the members of the household, I was asked, when conscious, if I would object to having a doctor diagnose the case. I said that if the practitioner would consent I was willing, so long as I was not made to take or use any material remedies. One of the leading doctors was therefore sent for, and all through his visit I was struck by his courteous manner, considering that he had been called in under protest; but I saw that this too was due to the power of Truth. Knowing that I was having treatment from a Scientist, he quietly said he would not bother me with any of his material remedies, but would just watch the case.

I struggled on for a short time, then fear became intense. I felt I could fight no longer, and that my time on earth was short indeed, so my people were asked to telegraph to a Christian Science friend to whom I was much attached and whom I longed to see. She came that night and her presence seemed to allay my fears, and through the untiring work of the practitioner for the next few days the power of divine Love was made manifest and I recovered. The doctor continued his visits for about a week, and each day did not hesitate to show his surprise and pleasure at the rapid and marvelous way in which my lungs cleared. This experience has helped to show me more clearly than ever before that "with God all things are possible," that there is only the one power, that whatever power evil seems to have is only what we choose to give it.
