COMPENSATION

From the August 1917 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science is bringing the human mind to see that it cannot correctly conceive of God as apart from the universe which reflects Him. Whatever God is, is reflected in His creation. Principle is understood through the idea, and the idea cannot be wrested from its source. The creator maintains the equilibrium of the created. No second or minor power, presence, or action frustrates the balance of perfect being. Infinity is one. The equipoise of the One is perpetual. Reality has no ebb or flow, no dark alternating with light, no action against reaction, in unresting effort to level and equalize. The law of compensation is perfect and enforced. Infinity reveals reflection compensating the reflected, expression making equal return to the expressed. In short, a creator "worthy ... to receive glory and honor," having created all that is good, receives back the adoring obedience of the perfect ideas which were made for His pleasure.

Everywhere one looks upon mortal experience there appears just the opposite condition. "Denial of the oneness of Mind," Mrs. Eddy writes on page 205 of Science and Health, "throws our weight into the scale, not of Spirit, God, good, but of matter." Belief in the dualism of matter and mind is represented in every part and particle of the supposititious material universe. Heat and cold; day and night, pain and pleasure, loss and gain, superabundance and deficiency, gifts and defects, good and evil, counterfeit the eternal law of compensation.

In accepting evil as a reality the human mind loses the Principle of good, so that good and evil beliefs, "measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves," to quote St. Paul, can find no permanence, but must continue in a state of flux. Even if nature or human law could contrive to preserve a balance according to this material dualism, the scales would still be false. They can never be adjusted until it is understood that God is All and there is nothing to weigh against Him.
