I desire to express my gratitude for Christian Science, in the hope that my experience may be of help and encouragement to others. This healing truth came to me in the darkest hour that could come into human experience. From the age of fourteen I hardly knew what a well day was, and while still very young I was obliged to give up my schooling and spend two years in semi-invalidism. When twenty years old I was able to prepare myself for the business world, and launched out to make my living, but this was accomplished through reliance upon strong medicines and will power.
About thirteen years ago, I faced a very grave condition. There seemed to be not a sound organ in my body, and at this time there developed a tubercular condition of the glands in the right shoulder and neck. I submitted to an operation, followed by another six months later. A complete breakdown, both mental and physical, followed. Every attention and care available was given me, but with no favorable result, and finally our family physician declared that everything had been done for me that the medical profession had to offer. He said that in time I might be somewhat better, but I never would be a well woman, and must not expect to take an active part in the world again, because I would always have to be kept free from responsibility and cares. This surely was a dark outlook for one so young. I was at this time taking three opiates to get a few hours sleep at night, and was left alone very little during the day.
A few days following this verdict, an aunt who was a Christian Scientist came to our home. When I had finished telling her my troubles, she inquired whether I had ever heard of Christian Science, and I asked her to tell me something of it. She explained it somewhat and then assured me that Christian Science would heal me if I was willing to do my part. When my husband arrived home that evening, I told him of the new ray of hope; and after having Christian Science explained to him, he said by all means we should give it as fair a trial as we had given everything else. The next morning found me at the home of a practitioner taking my first treatment. That night I slept like a baby, although no opiate was taken, and this gave us great hope. In six weeks I was completely healed and went back to my old position, which I had been obliged to give up a year previous on account of ill health. I was able to do more work and harder work than ever before without any sense of nervousness or weariness. The following year I retired from business and took charge of a home of seven rooms, doing all my own work, and was very happy.
