Testimonies of Healing

Since childhood I had been sickly...

From the October 1919 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Since childhood I had been sickly and was told my condition was due to heredity. When a young girl I was stricken with typhoid fever, which was followed by great weakness of the stomach and bowels, causing severe suffering. My diet was very strict, and although under a doctor's care a great deal of the time and instructions were conscientiously followed, I became so weak that I was compelled to give up my position as teacher. Later, cramps and peritonitis manifested themselves, compelling me to remain in bed for months and permitting me to take only light nourishment. After a year and a half of nature cure treatment I was able to eat a slightly increased variety of food and be up from eight to nine hours each day, but to endeavor to seek steady employment or return to my profession was entirely out of the question.

While I was in this plight, a friend told me of Christian Science. At first I considered it from a very skeptical point of view and expected my condition to become worse rather than to improve. Just before receiving my first treatment I was suddenly taken ill with varicose veins, but pulled myself together on the appointed day to visit the practitioner, although in great pain. While returning after treatment I felt wonderfully uplifted, and just before arriving home I suddenly became conscious that I was able to walk freely and easily and did not experience the slightest pain in the legs. I was healed of the varicose veins in that treatment, although I had not mentioned them to the practitioner. After several weeks' treatment I was a perfectly well woman. I could eat what I wanted and was able to work like all other normal people. Shortly after my healing I passed a new and quite difficult professional examination with satisfactory results, whereas before I was scarcely capable of mental work. For over seven years I have been working at this new and at times quite strenuous occupation without having been absent a day.

I am, however, much happier over release from mental bondage than for the physical relief obtained through Christian Science. I have learned to know God, good, as the only power, and to recognize the nothingness of all evil and inharmony. This inspires me to work for my own improvement and to see my fellow men in the spiritual light and treat them accordingly. I am truly thankful to God for this release which has made life worth living, and sincerely grateful to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who again showed us the way to the truth which makes us free.—
