On page 3 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says: ''Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more." I would not be availing myself of "the good already received" if I neglected to express the deep gratitude I have long felt for the great blessings received by me and by my family through the study of Christian Science.
When I started to read the textbook, just after being bedridden for two weeks with an attack of tonsillitis, which had been an annual event with me for several years, I was so impressed with the reasonableness and logic of its statements that I continued reading and became intensely interested. When I had finished the book I was convinced that I had found the guide which would show me the path out of sin, sickness, and the false claims of mortal mind, and I shall never forget the joy of that conviction. Since that day, about eight years ago, I have taken no medicine. About a year after I began to read the textbook, an attack of tonsillitis was overcome in one treatment, and I have had no trouble with my throat since.
After wearing glasses for about ten years for what eye specialists called astigmatism, and suffering a great deal, I was instantly healed while listening to a lecture on Christian Science, which revealed sight as spiritual, not material. Since that night, now over five years ago, I have not worn glasses or felt the need of them, although my work for two years afterwards was the most confining and strenuous I had ever done. I was an inveterate smoker, usually smoking from six to ten strong cigars daily. This false appetite was completely destroyed in two treatments through the faithful work of a practitioner.
