ABOUT eight years ago I came into...

From the March 1919 issue of The Christian Science Journal

About eight years ago I came into Christian Science as a last resort. I had been a sick woman for a good many years and had tried all available remedies, at last undergoing an operation which did not bring the expected results. A sister living in California heard of my operation and sent some Sentinels to me, saying that she had found healing through Christian Science. Knowing nothing of this religion except what the newspapers said about it, I put the Sentinels aside, giving no heed to them, but on coming across them one day I sat down to read and my thoughts became enlightened. I kept on reading and one day when calling on an acquaintance I could not help speaking of Christian Science. She related a wonderful healing in a sister's family. She also lent me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," but I found myself puzzled in reading it just as she had been. I pored over its pages, however, and often it seemed that while trying to catch some meaning, these words came to me: There is help here for you.

I was at this time confined to the house, and I grew weaker, until I could not dress myself nor go from the bed to the couch without assistance. I learned afterwards that the doctor had told my family that everything which could be done for me had been done. I thought the battle was lost, but when my husband came to help me into bed one night, I took heart and said I would like to try Christian Science, if he had no objection. He said he had none; that I must try anything I thought would do me any good. The next evening a practitioner came to see me and when she asked if I was willing to give up all medicine, my answer was that I would be glad if I never had to take another spoonful. I slept well that night, and after her third visit I walked through a short corridor into the dining room. The family were speechless, but with a smile I told them I had come to have dinner with them, so they helped me to a place at the table. When we were seated I said to my husband, "Did you think I would ever be able to sit down at this table with you again?" He said, "No." "Then," said I, "let us give thanks and praise to God first."

A Christian Science Society has been formed here, and though there are not many members, all are earnest seekers for the truth. My husband, who has had some help in Science, goes with me to attend our services on Sunday. My heart is filled with joy and with praise to God, who leadeth us in all our ways; and how grateful I am to Mrs. Eddy, who has brought again to mankind this healing truth which blesses with the peace "which passeth all understanding." —
