It is now nearly fourteen years since I first began to study Christian Science. At that time I was not at all strong, and was very unhappy, always seeking for something which I never seemed to find. On the advice of a friend I began reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, but I was very much puzzled by the book, and could make nothing at all out of it except one sentence on page 143, "The sick are more deplorably lost than the sinning, if the sick cannot rely on God for help and the sinning can." These words sounded reasonable to me, and yet I felt they were certainly too good to be true, as the whole experience of my life seemed to contradict them.
It was not till after I had finished the first part of the book and began to read the chapter called Fruitage, that I came across a testimony given by a lady who said that her reading of Science and Health had cured her of an eye trouble and that from that date she had given up the use of glasses, It occurred to me that if one woman could be benefited in this manner by the reading of Science and Health, why could not I also find help in the same way? At this time I did not understand how to apply Christian Science for myself, but the reading of the book evidently did the work for me, as from that day to this I have never worn glasses for reading, and as time went on I gradually gave up the use of them altogether. I also threw away a number of medicines of all sorts which I was in the habit of taking, and am most grateful to say that I have never taken a drop of medicine or a tabloid since. But all these blessings are nothing in comparison with the spiritual illumination which I have received through the study of Mrs. Eddy's writings and also of the Bible in the new light which Christian Science throws upon it. I cannot say how grateful I am for the help and inspiration I have gained from the teachings of this noble and great woman.—Chelsea, London, England.
