Ten years ago my mother began to study Christian Science, and in my ignorance of the real nature of this teaching I thought, What foolish fad will she take up next? When, however, in two weeks she was healed of a discordant condition of several years' standing, I knew that there must be some truth in Christian Science, so began to pick up the Sentinel and read it when no one was looking.
About two months after I began to study this wonderful subject, we had a healing in our home that proved the power of Christian Science beyond the shadow of a doubt. My brother was thrown from his bicycle and struck on his head. He was able to get up and walk home and the injury did not at first seem serious. As days went by, however, he neither studied nor played as usual, but sat around the house in a sort of stupor and at night would be out of his head and talk deliriously. This condition continued for a week and it was decided that something must be done. Even those in our home who had no faith in Christian Science did not see how a physician could do anything to help the inside of a boy's head, so a Christian Science practitioner was called. It was nine o'clock in the evening when she came and the next morning my brother was perfectly normal. Surely we were grateful and our eyes were opened to the possibilities of trusting God's loving care.
I myself have been healed of many minor ailments, but feel that my chief blessing has been protection, for in my ten years' study of Christian Science I have not missed more than half a day from school or work on account of illness. The availability of Christian Science help in case of accident is also a source of great joy to me. The first healing of this kind in our experience occurred shortly after we became interested, when my mother ran a rusty ice pick clear through her thumb. Christian Science treatment was given and in a few minutes there was no pain; nor was there fear or any poisonous after effect, as might have been anticipated by a physician. I was instantly protected when a horse kicked me on the knee. I felt no resentment, only love for all God's creatures, and where love was, no hate or injury could abide. At another time a large piece of the head from a burning match fell into my eye, but in less than ten minutes all sense of pain was overcome. In my business, also, the effects of Christian Science thinking are felt, and often after a Wednesday or Sunday service, when I have been uplifted mentally, I have grasped an idea that was helpful in my work; sometimes the solution of a technical problem has come to me in this manner after days of material calculation have failed to give the answer.
