THE COMMAND TO HEAL

From the June 1921 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science teaches that the claims of the human so-called mind are to be healed. It teaches that these claims never really exist. The mortal or human mind gives disease or discord a name and a law by which this disease or discord can operate and material upon which it claims that it has power to operate. It also claims to be able to create circumstances and conditions under which its law can operate more readily. But when we begin to study the Bible in the clear light of Christian Science we see that in the first place there is no mortal mind to name disease or discord. It is a false sense, a belief in a power or mind other than divine Mind, which claims to be able to do such a thing. A claim to ill health, or sin, has no name to begin with. God has never named it and in spite of the claim of mortal mind to the contrary, there is no other mind to name it. Now as for the law under which this so-called mind claims to be able to operate, when we recognize and acknowledge one God and therefore one power, we can recognize and acknowledge but one law, the perfect law of absolute harmony. This is God's law which is governing all things in perfect peace at all times. If this is a fact, where is the law through which this nameless nothingness can operate?

The claim is also that there is material upon which disease or sin can operate,—flesh, or blood, or nerves; in other words, matter. And the human mind wants to know how we dare say that matter is not substance and real. We dare to think and say it because Jesus said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing." Through the teachings of Christian Science we begin to prove as Jesus did that the above statement is true. He also said that his words were eternal life unto all who believed, and when we are willing to do so, we turn away from calling flesh life and call Spirit Life just as Jesus did. Then we are commencing to destroy the claim that mortal mind has any substance upon which to operate, for we know that Spirit cannot be operated upon by anything material. Indeed, the material mind does not even comprehend or know of Spirit or its whereabouts or its activity. When we see that all material life, so called, is only a claim of material sense or a suggestion of life, and is in no way a part of real or spiritual sense, we glimpse reality, true Life, which is entirely different from the false or material sense of it. Material existence is simply made up of numerous claims of mortal mind that certain things and conditions are real and are according to law. But there is an ever present spiritual sense of the real Life of man which mortals can begin to use right now and so deny every false claim of mortal mind and finally reverse the whole viewpoint regarding life. This is the way to heaven and harmony, and there is no other way.

According to the material senses, evil and disease are mightier than good and Life, and can finally destroy good and Life. But these false senses, not even knowing good, Life, are, of course, thinking only of a false sense regarding it, while all the time the real or spiritual sense of man knows nothing of the false and unreal and is constantly conscious of only peace and harmony. This real sense of good and of Life is perfect and eternal, with no hint of evil or of death. None of the claims of mortal mind ever enter true consciousness. It is a pure consciousness, and in describing it in the twenty-first chapter of Revelation John says, "There shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie." God's spiritual idea is the creation referred to in the last verse of the first chapter of Genesis, "God saw all that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." The work of Christian Science is to establish this real sense of man here on earth. And it is the work of Christian Scientists to reverse every claim of mortal mind with this truth about man and his Maker. The reversal will surely come as the facts of real existence unfold to us, and whether these facts unfold slowly or come suddenly can make no difference when the final reversal is accomplished. The one thing necessary is that we truly seek the kingdom of God and keep right on truly seeking it until we do reverse all the claims of mortal mind.
