OUR TEACHER

From the August 1921 issue of The Christian Science Journal

So perfectly was Christ Jesus' thought attuned to the one Mind, his Father, that every object became a subject for a lesson, every obstacle manifest as sin disease, or death an opportunity to reveal the nature of God. With parables aglow with the wonderful teachings that became waymarks to God for those who had ears to hear, and through his healing works, a marvel to the human thought which so long had been bound by its belief in the reality of evil, he taught and demonstrated the truth. He was ever so closely allied to the true idea of God that the human sense became submerged in the divine and the Christ was manifest "of whom the ancient prophets had caught a glimpse, and whom Isaiah foretold as one who could give to those who were ready to receive him, "beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified." Christ was revealed through him and thus he became Jesus the Christ, the great teacher of Christianity.

To the twelve apostles, through their receptivity to good which Jesus had perceived when he chose them, a great opportunity was given to learn from the great Master, when on the shore of Galilee, by the wayside, or in the temple in Jerusalem he taught and demonstrated the divine Principle, God; but the Bible shows us that it was only after the ascension that they understood the real nature of the Christ which had been the impetus of Jesus' mighty words and works. Have we the Christ any less with us to-day? Has he not said: "Lo, I am with you alway"? This I, which was before Abraham, is now, and will be in all eternity! It spoke to Abraham in Ur, to Moses out of the burning bush, to Paul on his way to Damascus, and it spoke to Mary Baker Eddy, when, after a life of earnest endeavor to be a follower of Jesus, the truth was revealed to her through her healing from what seemed a serious injury.

Well versed in the records of the Old and New Testaments, where records of such healings abound, she realized that this blessing, which had been bestowed on her, was not a special dispensation from God, who 'is no respecter of persons," and turning to the Book of books for explanation and reason she discovered the rule by which Jesus and the early Christians performed their mighty works and solved the problems of their day. Through divine revelation she found the law which underlies all being and is applicable to all mankind, saving and healing wherever it is adhered to. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and in her other books we are given the result of her research work, in language clear enough for a child to understand, yet with such beauty as only a subject so divine can command,—the Science of Christianity, or, as she has named it, Christian Science. On page 107 of Science and Health she shows in a few concise words and with touching humility the earnest seeking and striving, the devotion to and longing for God which had characterized her whole life experience. She had proved herself a true follower of the founder and teacher of Christianity, who had taken the cross of self-sacrifice to win the crown and demonstrate eternal life. She said there: "God had been graciously preparing me during many years for the reception of this final revelation of the absolute divine Principle of scientific mental healing." Thus she became Leader and teacher for the thousands who are seeking deliverance from the material beliefs of pain and the fleeting sense of pleasure. And finding their longing for the peace that comes through understanding stilled through Christian Science, and thought uplifted in the joy that is attained through the blessing of reflecting good to their fellow men, they revere and love her who helped to make this possible.
