Testimonies of Healing

When Christian Science came to...

From the August 1922 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When Christian Science came to the attention of our family, I was in a condition where I was entirely without hope, and only wishing for death to bring me relief. I had a complete nervous and mental breakdown, constant headaches, and was unable to sleep at night, dress, or care for myself. Nothing gave me any joy; and I spent all the time planning some way out of my misery. My religion, which I had always depended upon for help in my needs, gave me no comfort; and this seemed the hardest to bear.

At this time, after doctors had said they could do no more for me, I was treated in Christian Science by a practitioner; and, although I now feel the foundation was being laid all the time for my healing, at that time I saw no results. Another practitioner was tried; still, apparently, I was the same. Finally, a third practitioner was secured, who was willing to take me into her home where all the members were Christian Scientists; and I was lovingly treated by the practitioner, and helped by the rest of the family, till I was healed. My healing seemed a slow one; and had not the practitioner had a firm hold on Truth, I am sure she must have been discouraged; but she never wavered; and after eleven months I was healed, and able to go home and take up my duties again. It was like being lifted from the darkest pit into the blessed sunlight. This healing has stood the test of seventeen years; and during that time I have had many proofs of the efficacy of Christian Science, whatever the need.

I have been grateful for the slow healing, which gave me the opportunity to get an understanding of Christian Science, whereby to stand when the testing times came, as they do come to every Christian Scientist. I have also found in Christian Science a thoroughly satisfying, practical religion; and the Bible, with "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy to explain it, has become nearer and dearer than ever before. I am grateful for an increased appreciation of the life and work of Mrs. Eddy, and what her standing alone for the truth has meant to the world; and for the Manual of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, which she has given us as a guide; also for the church services, including the Wednesday evening testimony meetings, which are a continual help and inspiration.—
