With heartfelt thanks I wish to express my gratitude to God for Christian Science and what it has done for me. In the early part of the year 1913, severe pains were experienced in my legs and feet, which increased until they became unbearable. After consulting and receiving treatment from many physicians during a period of four years, without any permanent relief, I was prevailed upon to visit a noted institute on nervous diseases. After an examination, I was informed by the specialist in charge that I had an advanced case of locomotor ataxia, and immediate and special treatment, known to all physicians for such cases, was advised. I placed myself at once under the care of a well-known and famed specialist of this disease, and after a prolonged period of treatment, during which time the pains increased in intensity, so that I was unable to rest night or day and moved about with great difficulty, I was finally informed that I could not be cured; that the medical profession had never recorded the healing of such a case, and it would be only a question of time when I would be entirely incapacitated.
While I was in this mental state, death would have been a welcome relief from misery and suffering. My loving wife at this time asked me to give Christian Science a trial, but I could not bring myself to believe that it was able to do what the physicians, specialists, and medical institutes had declared impossible. Sometime later, a business associate asked me to call on a gentleman who had been healed of a similar disease through Christian Science. When I did so he gave me such convincing proof that I could no longer doubt the healing efficacy of Christian Science. I immediately sought the aid of a practitioner, who listened to my story of agony and suffering and of lost faith in God. I was in a state of mental collapse and despair. In kind and loving words I was asked if I would be obedient to the law of God as revealed in Christian Science. On being assured that I would, the practitioner lovingly told me that God was ready and willing to help and heal me. After the first treatment, a peace so calm and assuring came over me that all fear and pain left, and I knew that I had found God. That night I slept, for the first time in many months. In one week I was healed; and there has been no least desire for any material remedies. This healing occurred nearly five years ago. The need for eyeglasses, which I had worn for twenty-five years, was overcome; also the desire for smoking, to which I was addicted, has left me. I have increased twenty pounds in weight.
With the physical healing came an intense desire to know more of the source of this divine healing; so I immediately began the study of the Bible with the aid of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I am truly grateful for the spiritual enlightenment thus gained.
