INVARIABLENESS OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE

From the August 1923 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In attempting to write on such a vast subject as Christian Science, what stands out above all else is the necessity for keeping in thought from the outset that the authoritative sources of information regarding it are "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and the Bible studied in its light, together with Mrs. Eddy's other writings. The Science of Christianity has been stated with absolute exactness by Mrs. Eddy, and anything we may have to say about it is reliable only in so far as it conforms to her teachings. The importance of remembering this can scarcely be overestimated; and we should be careful to direct all inquirers to a study of these works, as the only means by which a complete understanding of this Science can be gained.

If we wished to gain a complete knowledge of any other subject, we would not be so foolish as to think we could acquire it merely by consulting a student of the particular subject, however learned or proficient he might be; we would consult and study the standard textbooks, in which the fundamentals and rules were correctly stated. If we take this precaution in studying lesser subjects, how much more should we pursue it when dealing with this the greatest of all subjects,—the Science of being.

Why, then, it may be asked, write at all on the subject of Christian Science? It may be answered that to be an active Christian Scientist lays upon one the necessity of using every opportunity to bring this glorious truth to the apprehension of mankind; and its presentation through the written word is often an effective means of turning thought to its study. It is most essential, however, that all that is written should be correct in statement; and that the indiscriminate publication of articles purporting to present Christian Science, but which are incorrect or unsound in statement, should be avoided. Recognizing both the value of the means and the danger of its abuse, Mrs. Eddy established The Christian Science Publishing Society as an integral part of the Christian Science organization. Thus, she not only provided for the dissemination of Christian Science literature, but also took wise steps to insure that this literature should be accurate and authentic.
