Before I gained a knowledge of Truth as revealed in Christian Science, life was to me an unsolvable problem. In spite of thirty years' association with orthodox denominations, I had not realized the conscious sense of unity with God which I longed for, and there remained a veil which shut out the light.
When I first attended a Christian Science service, I knew nothing of the teaching of this religion, and was seemingly impelled by a sense of curiosity. The service, however, impressed me, the restful influence of the hymns and the message of the readings arresting thought; and, although not conscious of the fact until a few days later, I was healed at that service of all desire for tobacco. I was offered the loan of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and since that time this book has been to me a priceless treasure.
I recall, with a deep sense of gratitude, the unfoldment of Truth which came to me as I read the chapter on Prayer, and which brought the light that had previously been lacking in my experience. With this illumination of thought came the realization that at last I had found a religion which was practical and all-sufficing. Endeavoring to follow our Leader's injunction, "Study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit" (ibid., p. 495), I was lifted out of a condition of mental doubt and despair into such a consciousness of freedom that I could not but realize that Mrs. Eddy's discovery was indeed the truth, and that I could therefore go forward with confidence.
