For thirty-five years before I was...

From the February 1925 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For thirty-five years before I was led to try Christian Science I had never known a well day. Seven years ago I came to this state with the hope of gaining a little strength to pass through an operation. For two years I had been in a hospital most of the time, having had two operations for stomach trouble and two for nose and throat trouble. When I left home the doctor said that if I lived through the winter I was to return in the spring for another operation (the removal of a cancerous growth). I was existing on almost a starvation diet when I came here, and was very weak and emaciated. Upon arriving I seemed to contract a bad cold, which developed into pneumonia. Having been warned by the doctors at home not to take any medicine prescribed by any strange doctor who had not witnessed the operations, I was in a sad plight indeed; but man's extremity is said to be God's opportunity, and this certainly proved true in my case.

I knew nothing whatever of Christian Science, but a lady who was taking meals where I was boarding, and who was a Christian Scientist, was able to realize so clearly the healing ever-presence of the Christ, Truth, when I seemed to be passing on one morning, that I was restored to consciousness and began to recover immediately. She then told me of this glorious truth, this wonderful story of Life and Truth and Love, and said there was a practitioner near if I desired treatment. Needless to say, I gratefully availed myself of this help, and the healing work went on, not only for the immediate trouble, but also for the chronic ailments, which had so long kept me in bondage.

In two months the cancer had passed away; and from my first treatment in Christian Science I have never felt the need of, nor have I used, any material medicine. I had been told by the doctors that I could never eat certain things; but I am happy to say this fear was overcome from the very first, and I ate, and have continued to eat ever since, any kind of food set before me, giving thanks to God.
