THE MIGHT OF MIND

From the November 1927 issue of The Christian Science Journal

THAT God, divine Mind, is the all and only power is a truth that mortals seem very slow to grasp. Ever since the lie of the serpent, "Ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil," was first uttered, the belief of more than one power, of more than one Mind, has been almost universally accepted. For centuries power has been believed to be in and of matter; indeed, it has been supposed to be matter itself. All life and truth, all intelligence, all substance have been relegated by human belief to matter. Matter has therefore been held as responsible for mind, and mind has been thought to exist in matter. At the same time, matter and the claim of mind as apart from God have been said to be independent of each other and yet mentally dependent upon each other, a kingdom with two supposed rulers bringing about all sorts of contradictions and all sorts of consequently conflicting and calamitous results.

When Mrs. Eddy discovered the stupendous truth which she announces in the "scientific statement of being" (see Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 468), "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all," mortals rose up in consternation and resistance. Men could not have told just why they thus rebelled. They did not realize that the blow had been struck which was to annihilate all claims to matter and minds many—to all belief in more than one God. The arrogant, egotistical supposition, "Ye shall be as gods," had finally been exposed in its entirety, and no longer could there be any reason for belief in the idolatrous claims of evil and their fatal consequences . Inevitably idolatry revolted!

Those who call themselves Christian Scientists are they who have accepted this truth which God, the one and only Mind, revealed to our revered Leader. It is therefore their responsibility to prove that this revelation is here and now perfectly demonstrable as the way out of all that is false and unreal, of all that is undesirable and unlovely, of all that calls itself matter and claims as such to have reality, substance, mind.
