Testimonies of Healing

Early in 1917, I became suddenly...

From the September 1927 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Early in 1917, I became suddenly ill. The doctor who attended me informed me that I was suffering from valvular heart trouble. I spent a few weeks in bed, during which time I suffered from serious indigestion and sleeplessness. On getting up, I could hardly walk and felt dizzy and faint. I went away for a change, but was glad to be home again and felt worse than before I went away. It was then decided that I should be examined by a specialist. The specialist told me very little, and gave me very little encouragement. I seemed to be getting slowly worse. I then consulted a homeopathist, who told me that every organ in my body was diseased. I had a short course of treatment, but in a fortnight was in such a condition that I hardly cared what happened. I walked with difficulty, and felt most uncomfortable if I had even to stand.

I then heard of Christian Science, and was given some Sentinels. I read all the testimonies first, and tried to read the articles. I bought "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and then had some treatment. I began to be more hopeful, but had many ups and downs before I reached the stage referred to by Mrs. Eddy on page 298 of Science and Health, where she says that "joy is no longer a trembler, nor is hope a cheat." My outlook on life seemed to be undergoing remarkable changes. I had frequent intervals of deep and satisfying peace, and as I gained a clearer understanding of the beautiful teaching as given in Mrs. Eddy's writings, many of the wonderful words of our Saviour, Christ Jesus, seemed to be filled with a new impelling force. I was at one time an elder in the Established Church of Scotland, but am now joyful in being a member of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.

I recently spent a holiday in a mountainous part of Scotland, and climbed every mountain round about, thus proving, if such proof were needed, that I had more than regained my former healthful activity.
