THE HEIGHTS OF GIVING

From the September 1927 issue of The Christian Science Journal

JUDGED from whatever standpoint, giving is seen to be fundamental to all existence, since it makes possible reciprocal relationship. Under God's government, when enough of effort and intelligence and wisdom has been given toward the accomplishment of a righteous purpose, success necessarily becomes apparent.

Christian Scientists recognize the imperative need of giving up that false sense of selfhood which, so long as it is allowed to influence reason, darkens the perception of harmonious being and of action conformed to the divine law. Mrs. Eddy, on page 199 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," with unmistakable directness declares: "The devotion of thought to an honest achievement makes the achievement possible. Exceptions only confirm this rule, proving that failure is occasioned by a too feeble faith."

Have I given enough? must be the question by which to test the soundness of all endeavor. By our work and its fruits we are known and measured. In the purification of thought which accompanies true growth, sacrifice is quickly forgotten in the joy of overcoming. According to the Master's parable, those laborers were rebuked who complained that although they had "borne the burden and heat of the day," they received no more than those who had "wrought but one hour." It is the completeness of our giving, and not its approximation to some finite material standard, which determines not only its worth, but also our ability to receive in return. Gold appears visibly in certain ores; while other ores have to be carefully treated before the precious metal becomes noticeable. Since the gold alone is worth preserving, an unreserved surrender of all that hides it is the indispensable condition underlying its manifestation.
