I grew up in an atmosphere in...

From the September 1927 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I grew up in an atmosphere in which love and mutual understanding and confidence were unknown. The more I became aware of this, the more I suffered, and the more I longed for something better than what the world had to offer. I sought and sought, but in vain. Everything around and in me grew very dark. But divine Love was watching over me faithfully, and when I had grown quieter it was possible to prepare me for Christian Science.

Although at the time I had been confined a year or two in an asylum as an incurable, very sick patient, I had the desire to become a different person, to become free from a depraved habit, the result of which was serious faults of character. I suffered continually from these, and did my utmost to overcome them. Only through Christian Science was this possible, and then only after years of severe struggle. I was privileged at that time to realize that all other things are added unto us if we strive earnestly and assiduously to recognize the truth. I was gradually freed from the fetters which held me, and which mental diseases may bring upon one. It had been a time of great trial; and without Christian Science and the help I received, I could not have endured it. I should like to say this to those who have been struggling for a long time with difficulties of any kind: Just be faithful and persevere; Truth will win.

Happy as I was to have found Christian Science, I took little trouble to live up to its demands. That is, I did not rely entirely on God and the truth, but still relied upon mortals. I only superficially read the Lesson-Sermons, and suffered greatly for my unfaithfulness. But thanks to Christian Science I had gained a little knowledge of God's true nature. So now I clung to Truth alone and was helped. There was a great deal to overcome, to be freed from; but the more I endeavored to be true to Christian Science, the more I was able to realize that God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and ever present; that He is always merciful toward us, and lovingly takes care of us and helps us. Christian Science also taught me to overcome hate with love. Yes, Christian Science taught me how we can become free, happy, contented, grateful, and joyous individuals.
