COURAGE TO GO FORWARD

From the January 1928 issue of The Christian Science Journal

WHAT a promise of deliverance and preservation is given to "the servants of the Lord" in the fifty fourth chapter of Isaiah, the seventeenth verse of which runs: "No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord"! The prophet knew whereof he spoke. For was it not stamped on the face of the whole history of his people that when they were disobedient to the commandments of God they suffered, and when they were obedient to them they were blessed?

"The servants of the Lord"—it is they who prosper and are able to thwart the devices of evil. Christian Scientists know how true this is; for they have demonstrated in their own experience, often many times, that those whose thought is filled with good—that is, those who are righteous—are wonderfully protected from evil. Here is a great scientific fact, a fact which Christian Science makes intelligible to every humble, earnest seeker after Truth.

Christian Science regards good as practically synonymous with God, since God is infinite good. And since good is infinite, there cannot in reality be an opposite to it. In other words, what mortals call evil is unreal. Mrs. Eddy made the discovery of the allness of God, good, and the unreality of evil; and a greater never was made. To begin with, men jeered at it; for did they not see evil all around them in many a guise? Were not sin, disease, sorrow, lack, death, the constant companions of the human race? It appeared to be so. But Christian Science replied to the skeptic, You may demonstrate for yourself that evil is unreal in such a measure as to convince you of the fact. Mrs. Eddy herself demonstrated the truth by healing the sick and the sinning; and in many instances the whilom skeptic after study of the subject did the same. And so, on the basis of Mrs. Eddy's discovery of the allness of God, good, and the unreality of evil, the Christian Science movement has been founded; and on that basis it continues to progress.
