OUR PERIODICALS, THEIR CLARITY AND PURPOSE

From the January 1928 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN Revelation we read of the "pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb." Forever this river flows from the throne of God, its healing waters cleansing the nations of sin, disease, and death. They quench the thirst of men, and are never adulterated, for they never mingle with matter and human beliefs. The revelation of Christ Jesus made this water available for all men. He said to the woman at the well, "Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life."

After the Master's ascension, this water of life flowed for about three hundred years, out upon the plains of human activities, transforming men, healing them, and causing them . to loathe the dark, bitter waters of paganism and idolatry. But the world was not then ready to accept fully the healing waters of this river of life that came to men through Christ Jesus; hence his teachings were later misunderstood. He expressed the fullness of the spirit of Christianity, which demonstrated its exact Science. Because, however, men were not then ready to accept the Science of Christianity, Jesus could not at that time explain it to them. In connection with this he said: "I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you."

The message of Christ Jesus and his disciples has remained clear and distinct to this day, and brings healing to all who spiritually understand it. But the scholastic theology, which seemed to usurp the place in the people's thought of the teachings of Christ Jesus, distorted and confused that message. The waters of scholasticism but faintly satisfied the thirst of sincere seekers for the waters of eternal life. As a result, spiritual healing was lost, and was not practiced by the Christian church after the third century.
